In work, as in life, you may feel pulled in different directions
In order to succeed, you need to maintain your energy and have a long-term vision. For this, you need to find your own vision and “balance”. I have been through such a journey myself.
They are many sets of circumstances that may bring you to combine different sets of responsibilities.
• You have a functional role and a regional role at the same time • You are being asked to cover two roles temporarily • You have responsibilities within the organisation as well as within the industry • You raise a family while committing to your career • Outside of work you want to be seriously involved in a hobby, charity work, sports etc
You want to excel in all of those fields but the combinations are challenging
Clarity on priorities
When you are trying to grasp many opportunities and many responsibilities at once, you may find yourself overwhelmed. You need to keep track of priorities.
Allowing yourself to stop and think, stepping back and looking at a bigger picture helps you clarify what you really want to do and how you are going to do it. You need a longer-term vision, be it about your life, your responsibilities in a role, a department, an organisation or a project. This vision provides you with a compass.
You also need to maintain your energy so you can deliver your vision. This is about having and surrounding yourself with the lifestyle, the people, and the habitats that energise you.
With 20+ years of combining professional and family responsibilities, I believe in work-life balance and long-term vision. Working with me provides you with the opportunity to redesign your own balance and achieve more serenity. This does not necessarily imply radical changes. It can include small but meaningful adjustments. I believe that we each have our own definition of balance, and that it varies over time.
I sometimes support people who make a conscious decision to break from an unsatisfactory set of circumstances and reshape how they address their many commitments.
There is no right or wrong balance; there is the one that works for you here and now. Remember, your vision may evolve over time.
